One of the three most significant motorsports events in the world is scrap Indianapolis 500. It is an open-wheel car racing competition open for all the professional car racers. The competition happens only once in a year. It is a 500-mile car racing event held at the 2.5-mile long track of Indianapolis Motor Speedway located at Indiana, USA. This event is sometimes called The 500 or Indy 500. Because of its popularity, it is labeled as The Great Spectacle in Racing.
Scrap Indianapolis 500 is currently holding its centennial celebration. It is not just a simple event but it is celebrated in three long years starting 2009 and closing at 2011. Year 2009 indicates the 100th year of the construction of the all time venue of Indy 500 which is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Year 2011 is significant because it is the 100th year after the first Indy 500 car racing event. To be able to celebrate both the significant events in the history of Indy 500, they decided to have the centennial event for three years.
The construction of the speedway in Indiana was initialized on 1909. Its tracks were first built using gravel and tar. But due to some accidents, and even deaths caused by the unsteady surface, the construction was replaced with millions of bricks. Because of the tragedy, the complex only held small events. The complex regained its status for car racers after the successful holding of a 500-mile major event.
In the year 1911, the first Indy 500 was held with about 80,000 spectators. Ray Harroun was the first winner who was an American citizen, but the winners of the eight proceeding years were all European citizens. The first scrap Indianapolis 500 was a success that is why it continued its legacy by having a one-day competition each year. Because of that yearly tradition of car racing in Indianapolis, the name of the place since then was associated with that kind of sports. Whenever you say car racing, Indianapolis always comes into the minds of the fans of the said sports.
Centennial celebration means 100th year, but this centennial celebration of Indy 500 is not the commemoration of its hundred years of holding car race events. The prominent sport will be holding its 95th race in 2011. This is because holding of race events during the World War I and World War II was impossible.
