Computer turning off at its startup position is observed mostly in cases with problems related to hardware. The solution for the problem might change upon the actual condition, like how far the computer starts up, the last message that the user sees on the screen, and so on.
1. Overheating
2. Clean the Registry and Fix Errors

6. A Very Old Virus may be Infected
Overheating
The overheating issue might cause your computer to turn off in middle or at the time of its startup stage. This might occur if the fans installed in your CPU are not working properly especially due to dust related issues.
1. Turn off your computer.
2. Open the CPU Cabinet.
3. Remove the two fans. The first fan is attached to your CPU Case, and another fan is installed at the top of your Processor. Be careful while dealing with the fan installed on your processor.
4. Clean both the fans using brushes. Remove dust from the fans.
5. After completion, install these fans, fix the CPU Cabinet, and then turn on your computer.
Clean the Registry and Fix Errors
Problems in the Windows Registry due to which computer shuts down on startup. Incorrect data and outdated information in the registry are the main causes of this problem.
1. Turn on your machine.
2. Press F8 key to boot Windows in Safe Mode.
3. Download, install and run the registry cleaner.
4. Click Registry Cleaner | Start Scan.
Cleaning and fixing the registry manually is not so easy. You are recommended to use a good, reputed registry cleaning software.
RAM may not be Properly Installed
RAM refers to Random Access Memory. If the RAM is not properly installed in its slot on the motherboard then your computer shuts down on startup or otherwise turns off all of sudden.
So, remove it and install it again properly.
1. Turn off your computer.
2. Open the CPU Cabinet.
3. Remove the RAM from its anti-static bag, and hold it by the edges.
4. Determine in which slot you wish to place it again. You can place it in the same slot or in a different one.
5. Install it properly.
Check all Data Cables & Power Cords
Make sure that all the Data Cables and the Power Cords inside your CPU Cabinet are properly fixed. For example, the Power Cords of the SMPS connected to your Hard Disk. Or check the Data Cable of your Hard Disk is connected to your motherboard.
Test Other RAMs on your Machine
As a defective RAM causes BSOD and may also cause a computer to shut down on startup, it may sometimes make problem for turning your computer on as well. In such a case, you might be able to access the BIOS Settings but the system turns off while your operating system is loaded or in sudden.
You shall install and check another working RAM temporarily on your machine. For the information of the steps for removing and installing RAM, please refer to the above RAM may not be properly installed section.
A Very Old Virus may be Infected
Due to old viruses computer shuts down on startup randomly. The technology has improved. In modern times, they restart the system instead of just turning off. The latest antivirus software detects such old viruses easily and guards your system.
However, still if unfortunately this is the case, then you shall recover the whole system using a rescue media disk.
1. Download and burn the ISO contents of a rescue disk on a blank DVD ROM using a normal computer.
2. Insert the DVD ROM in your machine, and restart your computer.
3. Press F2 or Delete key till BIOS Configuration Screen appears.
4. Set the following:
a. First Boot Device: DVD ROM
b. Second Boot Device: Hard Disk
5. Save the settings, and restart the machine.
6. Press any key when prompted.
7. Disinfect your system by following the instructions that appear on the screen. I would suggest loading the rescue disk in Graphical Mode instead of DOS based No GUI Mode.
Highly Recommended
Though the whole problem was related to hardware components of your computer system, it is also important for you to keep your computer working fine and speed it up regularly. Too many junk files, overloading of the registry with outdated and incorrect information often causes such problems. Most of them are irreversible.
Prevention is always better than medicine. For this purpose, I am going to recommend you some tasks that you can perform weekly and improve your experience with the computers.
