Newtown – Powys – One of the Most Popular Towns in Wales

Newton-Powys, located in the Powys Wales county, is its largest town. It has over 12,500 people, living near the bounderies of Montgomeryshire county. This town is very famous because it is where Robert Owen, the founder of socialism, was born.

 

In the earlier day Newtown was founded near the end of the 13th century when a man named Edward the first of England went on to commission Roger De Montgomerie who built the centre which was for the hamlet of Llanfair – Yngnghedewain. Which was located near on the river Severn.

 

During the 18th and 19th centuries the town began to grow in population and started a flannel and textile industry and also the coming of the Montgomeryshire Canal. By 1967 the town was designed as the New Town and as time went on the a huge population of companies began to settle. This changed the market town and as of today it is the most largest town that is in the centre of Wales.

 

A warehouse which Pryce Jones built and named the Royal Welsh, still remains one of the tallest buildings in the town of Newtown. These two towering buildings was home to the worlds first depot for mail ordering. Bear lanes is now a shopping centre in town. This building was at one time a hotel.

 

There is the statue of Robert Owens that was put up in 1956 and stands in a little park just off of the Shortbridge and Gas streets. There is a replica of the statue that was later created in the town of Manchester England.

 

There are several museums like the Robert Owens museum along with others like Textile, W. H. Smith, and the Oriel Daily Galleries. Newtown A.F.C. Is known as A well known in soccer in Wales. There are also many schools in Newtown The Lady Green school, Hafren Junior school, and Newtown High school just to name a few. This high school of Newtown once received the outstanding ESTNY inspection report.
