Weddington, North Carolina

Weddington, with its population of over 8,500 is growing with leaps and bounds. This community located in Union County is just 15 miles southeast of the booming city of Charlotte. Although the village is in one of the fasted growing counties in North Carolina, the residents and city officials are determined to maintain its small town appeal.

Due to the rising popularity of the Charlotte area, most who are relocating, are looking for a community to live in which is not in the metro, but still close enough to commute to work. Weddington is rising to the top as a prime location to live and raise a family.

While striving to preserve their values and heritage, the city officials are also planning for the future. To deal with the influx of newcomers to the area, plans are underway for the construction of new homes, with an improvement to current roads and streets. The village is aware that these improvements to the area may cause a strain on the current residents, but the benefits, such as new job opportunities along with financial benefits will be, in the long run, a benefit to all concerned.

Weddington has never been a town to turn down a challenge, nor have they ever met a stranger. Anyone choosing to become a resident of the town, or simply passing through, have all been met with true southern charm and hospitality. They are a community of people who work together to better the community for all.

The citizens of this charming area continue giving back to the community, just as the elders had back in 1824. When Reuben Boswell donated 4 acres of land to build a church on, other farmers in the area pitched in and came up with $ 262.00 for supplies for the building. From there, the town began to grow. In 1826, a grandson was born and named after Reuben. Reuben B. Weddington, lived in the area for 60 years and was known as a prominent citizen who continued to give, as did others, for the betterment of the village.

In 1890, Reuben B. Weddington again, donated for the construction of a new church, that was to be built on the original 4 acres of land that his grandfather had donated some 60 years before. Due to his generous donations to the church, and the school the church had started, the grateful members voted to name the church after Mr. Weddington. And because the community had indeed grown up around this church, it wasn’t long, before the town itself took the official name of Weddington.

Although times have changed, the attitudes of citizens of Weddington have not. They still cling to the history and generosity of those who came before them. Just as Reuben Boswell and his neighbors had given to build a church, the citizens and neighbors who live here today, continue to give in order to better their community, that they will pass down to the future generations of this beautiful and historic town.
