An entrepreneurial spirit is like the proverbial genie-in-a-bottle—once it’s out, you can never put it back. If the flame of entrepreneurship burns deep within you, don’t suppress it. Let it out and start your new career. There’s no reason to wait.
An entrepreneurial spirit is indeed a gift. Some people are cut out for corporate life. Even if they like to lead, they’ll only do it with a safety net under them. In other words, regardless of whether they fail or succeed, there will always be a paycheck there for them. And some people are natural born followers, so the corporate life is perfect for them. Apart from the paychecks, there’s also a lot of perks that go along with a nice, fat corporate job. People get accustomed to the little things that wind up making a big difference in their decision to stay in the comfortable and cozy corporate cocoon. That’s a better option than having to go out and face the real world—alone.
Of course, many corporate climbers don’t realize the downside until it’s too late. And it’s funny that downside sounds almost like downsize, because when that happens, all bets are off. When companies start laying people off, and the nice, cushy corporate jobs evaporate, that’s when the scramble really starts. When that mess hits the fan, some people immediately go off and try to find another job, collecting unemployment compensation until they get hired—or go broke.
Other people use the advent of getting laid off to finally recognize and acknowledge the suppressed flame of entrepreneurship that’s been burning inside of them. They go out on their own and accept the fact that there’s no such thing as a sure thing. Regardless of the risk however, these people also realize—finally—that the only true form of employment security is self employment.
And risk notwithstanding, there’s something else to be said about calling your own shots. No, you won’t have the safety net under you—if you fail, you’re pretty much on your own. Which is why you probably won’t fail. When the flame of entrepreneurship is fueled by the energy of desperation, it will never be extinguished. But it’s the upside that drives most entrepreneurs. The total and absolute feeling of accomplishment when the pinnacle of success is reached, and the entrepreneur knows that they—and they alone—did it by themselves.
If you’re mired in the corporate maze but the flame of entrepreneurship burns within you, don’t wait any longer. Fuel it, and follow your heart to the success you’ve been dreaming of.
