Blank Screen

Many people are frustrated when they see a blank screen when they are certain the computer is booting as usual. This is especially frustrating because it is hard to solve the problem when you cannot see what is
supposed to be on the monitor because of a blank screen. This problem plagues novice computer users because they do not know what to do when they run into this problem.

First you have to know what is causing the blank screen to better understand how to fix it. The main cause of this problem is when the resolution is set to a setting that the monitor does not support. That means there is a minimum and maximum. If it is set too low the monitor will not be able to display the computer’s output. It will have the same effect if the resolution is set too high.

The problem comes in when it is time to change the settings. Guessing will be hard because you will not know what you are clicking on. The bad thing about this is that booting up in safe mode does not always work because the resolution can sometimes return to what it was before safe mode was used. That means that you would again have a blank screen. The quickest way I have come up with to solve this problem is to uninstall the video hardware in safe mode. You would do this buy going to the system icon in the control panel. Then you would find the device manager. In that menu, you would right click on the display device and click uninstall. This will set the resolution to a default resolution until the video hardware is installed again. Doing it this can remedy your blank screen and save you the hours of frustrating that I went through trying to get my monitor to work.
Another setting that can cause a blank screen is the refresh rating. The default refresh rating for most monitors is 60 MHz. As you increase the resolution the monitor has a hard time displaying with a refresh rate
higher than 60MHz. If this setting is set too high then the monitor will not display anything at all. I would recommend using the same method to fix this problem since you will not be able to see anything. Some of the more modern monitors, such as the HANNspree HF199H monitor, will convert the signal to a usable signal and display an image anyway. In this case, you can just right click on the desktop to reach display properties since this type of monitor will probably not show a completely blank screen. Clicking on the advanced options button located under the resolution tab will allow you to change the refresh rate of your computer. For those who have older monitors, uninstalling the driver for the video card or display device would be the best option.
