Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 MP Digital SLR Camera – a complete revision

The Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1MP Digital SLR Camera or otherwise known as the 500D in other parts of the world is an entry-level package with higher resolution and a better AF system than its predecessor. This puts it nicely between the XSi and 40D and very nicely replaces the XTi. Canon are nice enough to kit bundled together with the veteran 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS lens and the option to ship the body only for those who have a decent pair of lens available.

At first glance, the Canon EOS Rebel T1i the body is almost identical to the XSi, and weighs almost the same around 1.2-pounds. The plastic casing is rather light and feels almost unreal for someone who has dealt frequently DSLRs. On the other hand, this makes it ideal for the newbie DSLR user if it is not too heavy to handle. The grip is comfortable enough and feels very solid. The camera remains the same big, solid 3-inch LCD screen with almost all the buttons under your right for a quick and easy access. The buttons feel every individual so you can find your way through quite easily.

The modes on the dial are mostly unchanged, with the addition of the Creative Auto mode, which is a semi-manual mode that can be seen as an advanced Auto mode. All functions in this mode are automated, with a few exceptions. In essence Replaces shutter speed and aperture adjustment options with two sliding scales, adjusting shutter speed and aperture, making it ideal for the beginner who wants to start taking some chances.

Specification-wise the Canon EOS Rebel T1i uses a 15MP APS-C size CMOS sensor (with a 1.6x focal length multiplier). This means that the feature set is essentially the same as the XSi, with an image-stabilizing kit lens together to balance this out. Wake up and shooting in a quick 0.2 seconds and the camera can focus in a rapid 0.3 seconds in bright shooting conditions, and a 0.6 second shot was even to be supplied in dark conditions. The shot-to-shot time runs about 0.4 seconds for both RAW and JPEG formats. The camera’s continuous shooting speed is a respectable 3.3fps. The frame rate and nine-point AF system must be able to keep pace with most running children and pets.

The Canon EOS Rebel T1i video movie quality is solid at 30 fps 720p. Although it can handle 1920×1080 resolution is only at 20 fps with motion seeking a bit choppy. AF can be invoked manually while shooting, as long as you remember it a little slow in this regard. The camera uses the mono audio sound.

All in all, the Canon EOS Rebel T1i is an excellent upgrade for current owners XSi and the higher resolution and video capture capability are very impressive. While more experienced DSLR fans may find the camera a bit limited in terms of control, new users looking for an entry-level DSLR with a high resolution camera will find perfect for their needs.
