I first heard about personality type, when I was reading in the best selling book “Do What You Are” by, Paul Tieger. It’s all about how to match your career with your interests and values by knowing your personality type. There are 16 personality types total and out of those 16, less than a handful make up 5% of the population. I am in that five percent! I am what you would call an ENTP – Extroverted, Intuitive, Thinking, Perceiving.
I’ve always known I was different. Since I was a young child I remember feeling like I didn’t quite fit in with the others. I knew that I looked similar, but I didn’t find the same interests in what others found interesting. I was especially not interested in sitting at a desk for 4-6 hours of the day listening to my teachers go on and on about homework and fractions. I wanted to experience life and nature and BE OUTSIDE, exploring the world around me and being creative. I hated being cooped up in a room with four walls! When I became an adult I knew I had to find a career that would include, travel, adventure, new-experiences and even change.
Here are the two very IMPORTANT keys I feel and from what I have gathered from reading countless books on the subject, on how to get a better understanding of who you are?
1. Figure out what your core needsare.
2. And know your core values!
When your work fits your type, it gives you renewed energy and enthusiasm for LIFE!
Then practice LIVING them. Make the decision to go for your dreams, grab whatever you need for your journey and then don’t look back. When my sister and I embarked on our cross country trip, we knew that we weren’t going to have any fun if we looked back. We loaded all our stuff into storage (actually paid for someone to do it for us) and put a couple bags and blankets in the trunk and drove from Los Angeles, CA to Miami Beach, Florida and for our first cross-country road trip! We had a fabulous time, every day we did something different. And I was able to work my business while traveling which was such a bonus!
Now, go out and grab a couple books on the subject of career/personality type and figure out what you love to do. Think back to when you were kid. What got you out of bed in the morning and put a big smile on your face? Go do that! And have a blast.
Till next time,
