Hobart, The Exciting Capital City Of Tasmania

Tasmania is an interesting place and its capital city, Hobart, is its jewel. With a population of only about 50,000 inhabitants, the city is a quaint little place that stands at the foot at Mount Wellington. Situated on the banks of Derwent River, the city offers some amazing views, like you can’t see anywhere else on earth.

Back at the beginning of the 19th century, Hobart was a convict settlement. Times changed, and the area transformed into a vivid trading port where whale goods were being traded. The harbor still stands and it is really picturesque, reminiscent of the old days.

Hobart is rich in historic buildings that were built by the convicts that were brought here as their punishment. The city is quite easy to travel around as the streets are placed on a grid like structure that surrounds the Elizabeth Street Mall.

Here are some important places to see in Hobart. One is the Tasman Bridge, which is situated over the Derwent River. It is even longer than Sydney’s Harbor Bridge and connects the center of the city with the airport area.

Salamanca is one area of Hobart you will certainly enjoy. The old warehouses, made of sandstone, are now cafes, stores, restaurants or galleries. The open air market held here each Saturday morning is also a site to see.

A historic part of the city is represented by Battery Point, which started as a village for mariners. The alleys are tranquil and the cottages that stretch on the historic street are quaint and picturesque.

Besides warehouses and wharves, you can visit the Constitution Dock where you will find a wide array of bars and restaurants. The meals served here are quite palatable and the views of the waters make for all the money you will spend here.

An old brewery, named the Cascade brewery, must be on the list of places to see in Hobart. The building looks like a chateau and is a great spot for those that love beer or other alcoholic beverages.

Theater Royal is the oldest theater in Australia, and is among the best tourist spots in Hobart. While it is quite little, it provides great performances that you will certainly enjoy.

Another old building in Hobart is the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, also erected by the convicts at the beginning of the 19th century. The museum features plenty of artifacts belonging to the Aboriginal culture that sit next to convict items. You will also see here the last footage of the Tasmanian tiger, a species that is now extinct.

While you are on a museum tour, don’t forget to visit the Maritime Museum and the Tasmanian Cricket Museum, where you can view objects familiar with the famous sport.
