Archeologists said they had found a piece of a stone axe which was 35,500 years old on sacred Aboriginal land in Australia. It is the oldest object of its type ever found. The previous oldest ground-edge axes were between 20,000 and 30,000 years old. It was believed that the tool first appeared in Europe when populations grew and forests enlarged at the end of last Ice Age. The discovery is evidence that Aboriginal Jawoyn people from Arnhem Land could have been the first to grind axes to sharpen their edges.

Senator Patty Murray, a Democrat from Washington State, defeated former state senator Dino Rossi to win election to fourth term. Republicans made inroads on Tuesday and took control of the House for the rest of President Barack Obama‘s first term. The result also means Senate Democrats lost six seats in the midterm elections.

A suicide bomber detonated his explosives outside of the Waaili Mosque in the frontier city of Darra Adam Khel in northwestern Pakistan. The bomber targeted the Pakistani people when they were leaving the two mosques after Friday prayers. The death toll in bombings has risen to nearly 90. More than 100 people have been wounded as well. The attacks mainly targeted locals who had raised trial militias to support the government in its action against Islamist insurgents

The French interior minister Brice Hortefeux said that one of the two mail bombs, which were set to explode last week was defused approximately 17 minutes from exploding. The two packages that contain a bomb consisting of 300 to 400 grams of plastic explosive were found on separate cargo planes on October 29, 2010. It is said that the bombs sent to the United States from Yemen were discovered in Dubai and England.

A heavy rain caused huge mudslide near the mountainous Costa Rica capital, killing at least 20 people and leaving 14 others missing. A wave of mud and rocks rushed down the Pico Blanco hill at dawn and slammed into some 30 homes in San Antonio de Escazu, a southwestern suburb of San Jose. Many roads were flooded or blocked by landslides across Costa Rica, and schools nationwide were closed.

 

Dozens of rescuers and some trained dogs are searching for survivors and the missing.
