Well, scarp Indianapolis 500 which is also called Indy 500 or The 500 is a famous car racing event. It is even the largest single-day 500-mile open-wheel international car racing event. It is a once in a year tradition in Indiana, USA which is always held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The venue of the event has only 2.5 mile long race track, since the competition is a 500-mile race, the participants should complete 200 laps of the said race track. This event is considered as one of the three most significant motorsports events in the world. It reaches around 40,000 spectators and continues to increase each year. And because of its popularity, it is labeled as The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.
During 1911 to 1916, this racing event is not called as such. It was originally named as International 500-mile Sweepstakes Race. In 1919, the race was referred to as Liberty Sweepstakes, and from 1920 to 1980 the event was called International Sweepstakes. In 1981, the officially adopted name of the racing event was Indianapolis 500-Mile Race.
What is more, since the events policy was changed from an open event to an invitational event, the word sweepstakes was finally dropped and it was only after the World War II that the race was recognized as scrap Indianapolis 500. After such recognition, the event was given shortcut names like Indy 500 and The 500.
Last but not least, Indy 500 is a 500 mile race event, as reflected in its name. But there are times that the competition is not really to complete 500 miles. Due to heavy rains and other natural occurrences, the 200 laps in the 2.5-mile race track were not completed. To avoid accidents and even deaths, the organizer of the event had to stop the race even the race is not yet over. The year 1976 has the record of shortest race which only completed 102 out of the 200 laps required.
